Review: Silk Naturals Breathless Lip Gloss

Description: Breathless is pink with a little bit of brown to make it a bit more grown up and refined. It’s a fairly neutral pink – I’ve tried it on cool toned girls, and warmer toned girls, and it’s very flattering on both. Breathless has matte pigments, not super sheer and have just a hint of shimmer and glossy shine. Tough to describe but very wearable and lovable.

Ingredients: Organic Castor, Avocado, Jojoba Oil, Beeswax, Candellila Wax, Caranauba Wax, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, FD & C Colors, Flavor

I love the color. Its very versatile, brownish-pink and looks great on me. Only complain I’ve got is that the formula does not seem right as it gets very squishy squashy and melts easily making application very messy.

I was told that the formula on this one is the old formula which had not been perfected yet, newer lip glosses from Silk Naturals doesn’t have this effect.

That said, the color is great. Its like a nude lippie, that every girl has to have. The color is matte and long lasting, like a lipstick, but its application is not heavy like a lip gloss. The shade has got a slight bit of shimmer, but very slight, so don’t worry you’re not gonna look like you have a disco ball on your lips. =)

It can be graded as a pigmented lip balm as well as my lips don’t get dry on any of Silk Naturals’ glosses. Application is easy as it glides on easily.

Overall, apart from the messy formula, a great and wearable color to have on your lips!

Daily Hair Straightening

I thought that I’d share my two cents on an article I read on The Age a couple of days ago on the damage caused to hair that is straightened out on a daily basis with a straightening iron.

“A meeting of international hair and skin specialists in Chicago has been told the trend towards daily use of hair styling flat irons is causing massive damage to hair through strand burns and breaks”.

Apparently, the problem lies with the newer ceramic coated irons which is advertised as being more effective and safer on hair as the heat is so strong that it straightens the hair faster, therefore avoiding longer exposure to the heat.

However, daily exposure to this extremely strong heat settings to achieve straight hair is precisely the factor that is taking a toll on the hair’s structure.

I personally find it torturous to have my hair straightened with an iron as I often get burns and really hate the heat. That said, I do have my hair chemically straightened on an annual basis and in between, I basically do not attempt to re-straighten my hair with a hot iron with the exception of having it straightened after my quarterly hair cut at the salon. Even done at the salon, I find it torturous and I truly hate it, hence, why I limit my exposure to it. If not in the name of vanity, I truly would not inflict this torture on myself even annually, much less daily.

Even though I do it annually, I personally find that my hair is damaged and have a dry, weathered look and I have to incur more expenses with salon-based hair cleansing and treatment products to treat my hair and make it luscious and healthy looking again.

According to the article, only use the equipment on dry hair, never more than twice a week and at temperatures under 170 degrees celsius.

I guess moderation is key in everything.

Review: Bobbi Brown Pink Popsicle Lipgloss

Pink Popsicle is part of Bobbi Brown’s Pink Raspberry Collection which I so so love! This lip gloss retails for $40 in Australia and is definitely a lippie that isn’t an affordable one, but it’s certainly wonderful to have.

The color is a real pretty shade of sheer bright pink. Though the color looks extremely bright externally from the tube, it is actually just a beautiful and sheer shade of pink as in the swatch below.

Like all Bobbi Brown glosses, it is a little bit sticky but isn’t as sticky as MAC’s. However, the staying power is quite strong.

There are actually two shades of lip glosses that comes in the Pink Raspberry range. One being this one and the other is the Pink Raspberry Glitter shade. Pink Popsicle is definitely a more wearable one and it can be used on its own whilst the other one is more of a shimmery gloss you’d put on top of another lip color.

At this stage, this is unfortunately a limited edition shade. So when it’s gone, it’s gone, ladies!

Overall, as you can tell from my raving remarks above, I am a big fan of this gloss and have been wearing it every other day. I just love it!

Review: Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara

Description: An everyday essential for lashes. Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara has an innovative, all in one formula that lengthens, thickens and defines – without smearing, smudging or clumping. With special conditioning and strengthening ingredients for beautiful, luscious lashes.

I received this as a free sample during one of my makeover sessions at BB. I must say that I have been quite pleased with this product. In fact, I daresay that it is one of the best mascaras that I’ve ever tested, though do bear in mind that I haven’t tested THAT many mascaras.

I have used this BB’s top seller for quite some time almost on a daily basis so I believe my review today can do this product some justice. Its texture is very fine, very liquefied and it goes on lashes easily without clumping.

I like the look or rather effect it gives. It isn’t overly dramatic, though it does volumize my lashes quite a bit, but the look achieved is quite natural overall. It is perfect as an everyday mascara, in my opinion.

The wand as you can see below, is very thick, which I suppose helps in volumizing the lashes. This mascara dries quite fast and does not smudge easily. I believe the mascara costs around $45 in Australia, $22 in the US and comes in both Dark Brown and Black shades.

To me, as an everyday mascara, this does its job. However, if you’re in for a more flashy, dramatic look, then the BB Everything Mascara isn’t the one for you.

Silk Sandals from Oscar de la Renta

Isn’t the sandal gorgeous? Though I think the bow could be a little bit smaller, but nevertheless I thought it was a nice pair. Just so so glam!

Costs $700 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Sigh…

Weird Bag Fashion Trends

There seems to be something oh-so-wrong with the latest handbag styles at major fashion houses these days. I mean, seriously, I don’t know about what all you other ladies think, but to me, these are fashion disasters in the making. I wouldn’t want to buy them even if they were sold on discount at Target. Sigh…..Handbags used to be so much more chic and classy looking.

The three bags below are Balenciaga’s Autumn/Winter 2008 Collection and though it’s a relief to see this fashion house steer away from their usual and classic moto bags, I do beg to differ with these colorful and whimsical looking bags. I bet they cost a fortune though they sure don’t look good to me. Innovative, sure, but yeah, just not my style. I’d rather those classic moto bags, anytime.

And take a look at these bag-in-a-bag handbag. Sigh………………………..

Review: Ella Bache Signature Facial and Back Detox Treatment

Okay, the wedding’s coming up in a couple of months and I thought I’d better start rewarding and pampering myself with beauty rituals that will make me glow and radiate with health and perfection on my big day.

Since I loved Ella Bache the last time I went, I’ve decided to renew my pampering rituals with them again this time around too. Their day spa is beautiful and very comfortable to be in. You’d start relaxing as soon as you go in there and feel like dozing off into dreamland the minute the beauty therapist starts to work her magic.

Like any other day spa, there is the usual aromatherapy scent subtly lingering in the air as well as soft soothing music that just soothes and relaxes every single stressed muscle and thought that is within you.

That day, I started with my Signature Solution Facial which costs me $95 for an hour. It is a tailored facial solution meant for your specific skin concerns and diagnosis. The therapist started by firstly removing my makeup and massaged my face. She then scrutinized my face beneath the Wood Lamp which is a dermal diagnostic tool that illuminates skin problems invisible to the naked eye. She then decided on the specific facial solution treatment that is meant for my skin type and concerns based on that diagnosis.

There was the usual cleansing, toning, exfoliating plus a double masking and one of the masks she used on me was this really pungent smelling mask which had a strong acidic feel that I didn’t particularly like on my skin, but somehow once it was taken off, my skin felt smooth and de-stressed and I actually felt good. So, in the end, I guess that mask had a hint of eucalyptus oil that was supposed to be good to unclog pores and makes my skin clearer, though the smell and feel of it was definitely unforgivable. That said, the end result was well worth it.

She also treated my eye and lip area with the Eye and Lip Cleanser and Special Eye Creme which can be used to hydrate and moisturize both eye and lip areas as well.

Following the facial, I had a Back Detox done to decongest whatever clogged pores I might have there as though I use a body scrub often, the back is a place that is hardly reachable on my own and having a beauty therapist exfoliate, massage and mask my back to detoxify and eliminate toxins and relieve stress is definitely a wonderful experience. Plus, I feel really great afterwards and my skin seems smoother and brighter as well. Scrubbing has always been good and beneficial for both your skin and body, and you should definitely get help for those hard to reach areas like the back.

This treatments costs $75 for a 40 minute session.

They are quite pricey, to be honest, but unfortunately that’s the price I have to pay for a little pampering session in Melbourne. A lot of other places seems to cost the same. I’ll probably do just one or two more sessions in Melbourne every 2-3 months prior to the wedding, and go for an all-out pampering and indulgent spa session in KL when I get back end of this year.

However, if you are looking for a place to indulge yourselves and spa at in Melbourne, I’d recommend Ella Bache. They’re pretty good, their therapists are friendly and informative, yet not pushy with selling their products and their products are not bad as well. The environment is relaxing and comfortable and you’ll truly receive the value that you paid for.

Review: Prevention Fitness Systems’ Walk Yourself Fit DVD

Start walking today! All you need to do is put one foot in front of the other, and you’ll be on the path to getting fit. Chris Freytag will guide you through three different dun and energizing routines that will help you lose weight, get firm and improve your health. Walking programs include: The Accelerated Workout – a heart-pumping interval workout that combines fast and slow walking segments. The Body Shaping Workout – a muscle-firming walk that includes toning exercises. The Cardio Workout – a longer, fat-blasting routine that raises your heart rate and burns calories.

I really think that Chris Freytag does a good job with this walking workout. In fact, I liked all of Prevention Fitness Systems’ workout DVDs. They really do break out a sweat and it’s fun and energizing to work out to.

I know it’s actually best to take a jog out there in the parks, but unfortunately, I often get sick if I excessively expose myself too much to the cold air. In summer, it’s an intolerable heat and I hate the flies buzzing around all the time when you’re trying to get a good workout. Gyms are too expensive and since I cannot firmly commit to a disciplined schedule, I prefer not to happily donate my valuable dollars and cents to a gym. Besides, I walk for half an hour a day to and from work, so that’s pretty good an exercise for me I reckon. Hehe….I get the kicks from working out at home as it is in the privacy of my own home, allowing me therefore to make a fool of myself running, jumping, twisting or dancing awkwardly whle sweating/burning my calories away.

Anyway, enough about me and back to the DVD. I’ve had this video for almost a year or so now and I do it every so often when I can. I have a whole collection of fitness DVDs and I alternate between them as well as also exercising (or rather playing) with WiiFit.

I usually choose one of the three segments interchangeably and when I feel very fit and strong, I’d actually do all three and then get really zonked out afterwards. Ambitious, huh?

I’m rambling again. Anyhow, back to the DVD, the workouts are all fun and quite fast paced although it’s a walking workout. Compared to a normal everyday walking, walking to music on an aerobics pace is definitely more interesting. Plus, the addition of moves that firm, tone and shape your body is an added bonus as well.

Chris Freytag seems to be a lover of lunges though, so if you’re not up to doing tons of lunges at one go, then her workout videos are definitely not for you, but if you’re up to pushing yourself a little bit and want hot, sexy legs, then lunges are definitely the way to go! :)

There is quite a variety of movements on this DVD which allows you to work all of your different muscles during the one workout session, which is great. Chris is upbeat as an instructor, but has quite a cheerleader style which may or may not annoy you. I find her more tolerable than chatty Leslie Sansone, whom I also work out to on my lighter workout days.

The only thing I don’t particularly like about the DVD is that the warmup and cool down sessions are too short and that said, I feel as though the muscles are not warmed up nor cooled down properly before and after exercise.

Overall, however, this $29.95 workout DVD is bearable, fun to work out to and I’ve always had the motivation to follow through the segments fully. So if you’re looking for something reasonably good to work out to in the privacy of your own home, I’d recommend Pevention Fitness Systems’ Walk Yourself Fit DVD.

Review: Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base

Description: A Bobbi Brown best seller. Rich in feel, but never greasy, this advanced oil-free, face formula with Shea Butter, instantly hydrates, softens and cushions skin. Helps minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Bobbi recommends using Vitamin Enriched Face Base as the first step to prepare skin for the smoothest makeup application. With daily use, skin looks and feels the best.

I was introduced to this product during two makeover sessions I had with Bobbi Brown and the cream left my skin feeling really good afterwards that I really felt that I needed this as part of my skincare regime, particularly in this cold and dry winter season. Now the jar is almost empty and I can say with 100% certainty that I truly love this product.

The cream’s texture is very rich and is thus perfect as an overnight cream. Normally, I would prefer to use such rich textured cream at night and a lighter based one for the day. However, for this particular winter season which has been exceptionally chilly, the dry air has truly taken a toll on my skin and has left it quite dry and parched. So it was with much delight when I found this wonderful cream works well on my skin.

You would notice from the jar above that it does look very thick and rich. That said, you don’t need much on your skin if you have got normal or combination skin. I use quite a fair bit in a day as I have to replenish my moisture a couple of times a day. I do, however, use only a small amount at every application. However, even though I used quite a fair bit daily, this jar has lasted me two months now.

On top of that, this cream also works fabulously well as a face base which prepares your skin for makeup. According to the Bobbi Brown salesgirl I spoke to, all of Bobbi Brown’s moisturizers have this function, which I think is great as you wouldn’t need to put on a primer on top of this. The cream acts as a barrier between your skin and the makeup that you apply, which is just perfect, in my opinion.

It has a subtle and pleasant scent and I can ascertain that makeup does go on better and smoother when I had this cream on compared to with other moisturizers. However, because this cream is incredibly rich and heavy-based, I wouldn’t recommend it to those of you with oily skin as I would think that it will make your skin feels heavier and might even cause you to break out or itch due to excess moisture levels.

The consistency of the cream is buttery and smooth and is easy to blend onto your skin. The trick is not to put on too much on your skin as it might get a bit too much and heavy if you do. It seemed to work well on my sister too who used it over a week or so to help with her extremely parched and dry skin that day that was getting all red and itchy. It had helped soothe her skin concerns a little bit at least until she went on to try Avene’s skincare range.

Bottomline is, I do love this product and it works very well for my skin. However, at $75 a jar, it is not a cream that is affordable. That said, it does work and does wonders for my dry skin. I’m now in a dilemma as to whether I should repurchase this or move on to try some other cream. However, even though I might try another, I am certain that I will repurchase this again as I think this is a cream that is great to have to help me with my dry skin concerns as and when I need it.
